Radical Chinese characters are carved hollow into the wooden boards and allowing the children practicing writing with a wooden pen. At this initial stage, young children may not be capable of using paper and pencil with their tender fingers, it therefore avoids the constant frustration because of the mistakes in the correct sequence of the strokes or the necessity of erase.

This exercise improves dexterity with the hands, coordinates with eyes, focus on concentration. Practicing is important as it leads to memorization of the correct sequence of strokes in writing and it sets the stage before children actually use pen and paper.
